08/04/2008 7:53 PM Alert

We had a terrible experience this weekend with Mama T's.  We have had take out every week at this pizza shop for the past 4 months.  2 weeks ago, I had an emergency and was unable to pick up my order ($13).  First thing the next morning, before I left for work, I called to appologize and left my number if there was a problem.  We got pizza the next week without an issue.  Then we put in an order over the weekend and were told that we would have to come down and pay for the pizzas from 2 weeks ago.  Little late for that, that is why I left the message the next morning in the first place!  Being in customer service myself I figured they just let the order slide when they didn't get back to me, considering we have been  faithful customers and it probably cost him $5 if that.  When I explained that to the person taking the order on the phone, he said he was only going by what the manager told him but that he would call me back in 5 minutes after speaking to him again.  He called back and told us that we could order if we came in with the cash or gave him my credit card info over the phone.  Nice way to treat loyal customers.  We will never go back to this place.  I guess I feel like if there was a problem he should have called me the next day. Terrible business practice, terrible management palming this off on his employee.  Considering there is no shortage of pizza choices in Maricopa, I just wanted to throw this out there.

So, you ordered a product, failed to pay for it, and now you're upset that he wants money up front?

I say "Once bitten, twice shy."

I'm amazed that you are willing to publicly bash, and then boycott a company because they want you to pay for something that you called and asked them for.

And who doesn't give their credit card number to a pizza company over the phone? Thats the only way Ive ever paid for a pizza.

You're acting selfish. You incurred a debt and they want you to make good on it. You spout about being a faithful customer. Well, apparently, they were doing a good enough job that you wanted their service frequently. From their perspective, why would an appreciative customer stiff them?

Good luck with the other pizza joints. There's many out here, but not good ones.

I see both sides of the issue. They did make it and you didn't pick it up, but I think it's odd that they would make you pay full price for a pizza you never got. I could see them telling you they need $5 from you, or whatever it cost to make it. I could also understand them wanting you to pay up front for this order so that they don't lose more money. But most businesses would be willing to let the issue go...at the pizza place I used to work at, we often had at least one person not pick up their order. If they did it a few times, they got blacklisted, meaning we either refused to let them order again or did not make it until they arrived and paid for it. But that rarely happened. Granted, I have never been to Mama T's and probably will never go because I have heard a lot of negative things about the pizza..

How many times should he make $5 wasted pizzas before he starts demanding payment? One? Two? Twenty?

I've gotta side with ForensicUnit and the restaurant on this one. Your terrible experience is of your own doing and I think you should go down and pay it. They did nothing but provide you with good service and pizza for 4 months. Perhaps it was the store manager that should have gotten on these forums and griped about a non-paying/non-showing customer?

Regardless of his cost, you agreed to pay the amount requested as you always have. I would bet you would have better luck with them if you went down and made it a point to pay the manager himself and apologize. Perhaps building a relationship with the business would make them more comfortable letting you slide if an emergency were to arise. Believe it or not, a service relationship has two sides.

I take it they have good pizza? I don't eat much pizza, but if you stuck with it for 4 months, they must be consistent. I'll have to try them next time.

The pizza at Mama T's is horrible, at best.  But they have GREAT wings.

Terrible? whatever you must have bad taste buds. I would say they rank number 2 for Maricopa pizza parlors. Rosati's holds the number one spot.

But I don't totally understand your way of thinking here. You place a order for a pizza and fail to show up to pick it up. Then you gripe about how you try to order another one and they ask you to pay for a pizza that they made custom to your order? I appluade the manager in making you pay for the pizza you ordered and never payed for. And to come on the forums and bash Mama T's for your mistake just shows how unclassy you really are.

Do you have a cell phone?  How hard is it to take two seconds to call them up and let them know that you had an emergency and cannot pick up your order.  I bet they would have been willing to work with you. Maybe, they would have gotten an order for the same thing you ordered, and would have been able to sell the product without it going to waste.  By you waiting till the next day to call, they probably didn't believe your story.

I second that about mama t's in regards to being in the top 3 pizza places in terms of taste in the city of Maricopa. They aren't that bad compared to the others. Rosati's hits the first, than Mama T's, than Barros.....

that's just my opinion.

oh, the topic...sorry. I think for the OP; shouldn't automatically assume that a business will EVER let something slide just because of a certain circumstance. You have one side that is just trying to run a business, and you have the other who is trying to conveniantly work things out to their schedules/work ethics/home-life etc. etc. You can't EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER ASSUME and than get disappointed when things don't go your way or what you might expect.

I will back up mama t's.......now, on the other hand, mama t's has had a bad rap in maricopa's history for unfairly treating their employees to being a bit rude. I thought this was moreso what the topic was going to be about when I first read the title.

I managed a pizza delivery joint for over 8 years and never did this to a customer! Sure, we had some we had to confirm before making the pizza, but also a few on weekends that didn't get picked up.

If this happened on one occassion (and especially if they called back that day or the next day to explain), compassion and appreciation won. Next time you ordered, we were wary and watching for you. If you "no showed" again, we'd confirm future orders before making them.

NEVER did we make customers pay for previous orders they didn't pick up! That's just bad business practice.  And yes, this company is still very profitable and well known today.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying...while they do have a right to do that, I am surprised they would make you pay for the entire thing when you never picked it up. When I worked at Rosati's they never did that, and people just didn't pick up orders at least once a week. If it was a repeat offender, they just didn't accept orders from them anymore or made them pay in advance. Mama T's probably lost the $5 or whatever it cost to make the pizza...have her pay that before ordering next time and call it even. It is not worth losing a customer over.

Here is another thought for you, if you don't pay for your car what happens???

Repoed.

Point is, if you asked for the service expect to pay for it.

How so ever, since you never picked it up I would at least charge you 5 bucks and make you pay inadvance in the future.

I think it is a little ignorant of you to expect them to just understand that you had an emergency and let it go! What if every customer did what you did? Should they just forgive every one and take the hit? It doesn't matter how much it cost them to make the pizza. You placed an order and knew the cost of the pizza, $13. You should pay the $13 and apologize.
End of story.

I called and the person who answered did say sorry and would get them right out.. never offered a discount on future purchase or anything... got cold wings... will never go there again...
