08/03/2008 12:15 PM Alert

Hi

Our two dogs were boarded for a week and now I noticed both are having moments when it sounds like something is stuck in their throat. Both had their shots before being boarded.

I never have heard of kennel cough until going to google, but I think that might be it.  Has anyone ever experienced this and if so I Need advice? Is this something that will go away or should I take them to the Vet? Do I contact the place they were boarded at?

Thanks!

I adopt dogs from the pound and they usually come with kennel cough, we have always gone to a vet and they prescribe an antibiotic for it. I googled it and it gave great info. It is highly contagious but can just run its course if not too severe. I would contact the kennel only because someone's dog was not vaccinated w/ the Bordatella shot and passed it on, good kennels require this shot.

I rescued my 2 boxers and both had kennel cough when I got them. It is just like a common cold. I would even give them anything for it. If the cough is productive then the need to get the flem out of their lungs, If not, you can give them Vick formula 44d and use the directions for children's dosage. If they are small dogs, you may not be able to use it.  The bordetella vaccine is known not be 100% effective.

Do not give your dogs anything over th counter until you talk to a vet. Some pets can not have things like vicks and other medication. It could be fatal. Call you vet and get advice from them!

My dog got it from a neighbor dog. She was coughing so bad it sounded like a honk almost. It almost sounded like a goose or something, very strange. She was throwing up too. The vet told me to give her Pedilite and if it doesnt stop in a few days to bring her in. Well, it didnt stop so I took her in and they gave her some medicine for it.
I guess it is airborne, so If a dog is in the area of your dogs that has it, your dogs will get it too.

So we brought them to the Vet and they are on med's- and then while there found out that our boy has really bad allergies- He has been chewing at his back paw- Poor little guy!
But they seem to be getting better, more energy and less coughing-
