I have been feeding my dogs the same food (Nutro Max - green bag) for years.  Now, my 7 year old boxer has developed an awful itch.  He scratches all the time. He doesn't have fleas and we haven't changed anything that I can think of to make him crazy.  He has never done well with the heat, so I figured the itching was due to him getting older and it being hot. Has anyone had any experience with itchy dogs?  Do you recommend a dog food?  An additive?  Anything?

It could be so many things, but if I am not mistaken Nutro was a food that was on the dog recall list. You might want to try an all raw diet ( Natures variety makes a pre made raw that is frozen and very convienent and you can purchase at sunflower pet in Tempe) or I would recommend Wellness CORE its a grain free and reduces allergies... very high quality food and  Chitwoods could order it for you.

Same thing happened to our boxer/stafford mix- We were also feeding him Nutro and was always itching and would constantly gnaw at his paws. We took him to the Vet because his paws were all pink and sore- She advised that we change his food- We changed to Science Diet Sensitive Skin. It took sometime before we noticed a difference and it helped!

It was only the canned or wet dog food that was recalled, not the dry variety.

My Shelty has terrible hot spots and used to scratch herself bloody. The vet told me that both beef and wheat are common causes for this problem. I switched her food to a venison and rice formula. This worked for her, along with regular baths with a more skin oriented shampoo. I think the food is 'Natures Recipe' and the shampoo is an Oatmeal and Aloe formula.

My dog has bad allergies as well and would lick between her paws til they were bright pink and she sould get red spots all over her belly area so we took her to the vet and she got some allergy shots. You should try a lamb and rice or potato and duck formula it is suppose to help with the itchy skin.

Well, we switched dog food about 3 weeks ago to the Chicken Soup for the Dog stuff....It is a natural food that the feed store in town carries. It has worked great. So far, he has toned down his itching at least 50%. It is contantly improving. Also, since we switched all three dogs to it, there has been so much less poop! Triple score! So far so good....thanks for all the suggestions.
