My family attended the orientation at the new Saddleback Elem School last night. This new school is located on Porter, just south of Pacana Park, which will be one of the main roads to the new Wal-Mart. Can you image the traffic that will travel this road including the semi's that will be delivering product to Wal-Mart?  The City of Maricopa is planning to have a crosswalk across Porter but will not reduce the speed limit from 45 to 15!  This is CRAZY!  My husband and I were considering letting our children walk to school this year when the wearther warrants, but after finding this out, there is NO WAY they will walk.  Please help us and call our City Councilman to change this idoitic plan to not reduce the speedlimit.  Maybe with enough phone calls and email's they willreduce the speed limit for our all children attending Saddleback Elem.

I thought a 15mph zone was required in front of every school when it's in session.  Am I wrong in this?

Butterfield has 15 mph signs on 3 sides of the school. We need traffic lights so the kiddos can cross the street.

I heard that Butterfield was going to bus the kids who live across the street in Senita. Is that true? I figured they could just put crosswalks and crossing guards there for them to walk.

I am assuming that delivery trucks will enter the shopping center via the access roads from Casa Grande highway and not down Porter, again just an assumption. That said, I cant imagine that this would not be considered a school zone and traffic need not slow down when school is in. My kids will be walking but, fortunately we live in Glennwilde behind the school so no need to cross Porter

There is no law that says that a school has to have a 15mph limit around it.  That is between the district and the city.  The State only gives guidelines and passes the authority on to local jurisdictions.

It should be a law. We need to rally together and get the speed limit changed! These are our children we are talking about...... If I could, I would even lower the residential speed limit - I think 20 is too fast!

I agree it should be a law for there to be a 15 MPH school zone around schools esp. near main roads! At least the Saddleback kids get a crosswalk...Butterfield doesn't have a crosswalk nor school zone for the Senita kids that have to cross Honeycutt! I hope they fix these issues before someone gets hurt. And yes there is the option of busing your kids(across the street) but they would have to get on the bus way earlier than they should to just go across the street!

I noticed that legacy doesn't have the signs either. My husband talked to the principal on meet the teacher night about the signs. She mentioned going to the school district and petitioning them. That is where I would start if I were you.

I moved here from Tucson just a few weeks ago and I was really excited that it was going to take us five minutes to get to the school from our house.  Walking on the first day of school, it took us 15 minutes to get there and the traffic was horrendous.  We come out of the neighborhood through that little park right across the street from Saddleback and we have to go all the way to the one crossing guard and all the way back to the entrance.  I know it sounds lazy of me, but when the temperature is 115 outside, ten minutes feel like an eternity.  Plus cars are still zooming by!  I immediately called the school to complain.  They blamed city hall and asked me to call them.  I did.  They told me that because Porter is so busy (they said 10,000 cars pass through Porter every day and with Wal-Mart, it'll get busier), that they cannot lower the speed limit.  I think it's bull because Tucson has roads that are busier than that and they lower it!  I brought up the idea of a bridge and they told me that the ones in charge of a "great separation" are the school board.  He suggested for parents to band together and attend the school board meetings which according to him are twice a month.  I'll tell you this though, I am not a happy parent and I don't want an accident to be the reason why something gets done about the situation.  We should use this forum to form a group and make our voices heard!

I copied this from the MUSD website:

(Board meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month @ 6:00PM. Study Sessions are held during the first meeting of the month @ 5:00PM. Meetings are held at the Maricopa High School Room #1 Located at 45012 W. Honeycutt Ave. Maricopa, unless otherwise noted.)

Brent Billingsly, the city transportation director has said that the city doesnt want to slow down traffic and create congestion so they will not reduce the speed limit on major arterial roads. Butterfield has 15 mph signs on three sides but alot of kids come from Senita and have to cross Honeycutt and the city refuses to slow traffic down on Honeycutt. Welcome to Maricopa...Home of the most useless City Govt and school district on the planet.

Wow!  That's awful!  I saw that there were protesters there.  Maybe Saddleback parents should do that as well to catch some media attention.
