Alert | Who would you report a police officer's erratic driving to if you don't know specifically which PD he works for? Before I get a bunch of angry people replying: Yes, I know how hard a police officer's job is. Yes, I know he could've been on his way to a call, if he was, I hope he got there safely. Yes, I am extremely thankful that we have people courageous enough to do such an important job. Now, I have his license plate number, but he was driving so fast that I couldn't see what city he was from. This was on the I-10 last night...would I report it to DPS? Could I call any PD? If this was just a cop speeding then I wouldn't really care, but this officer was driving like a maniac. Even with his lights on he shouldn't have been driving the way he was. I was going 85 at one point to keep up with him so I could get the license plate number and then once he got around the two cars in front of him (by cutting off a semi-truck and then cutting off the two cars that were in front of him) he was gone...I can't even imagine how fast he was going at that point. It all started with him tailing me on the 10, I have never had another car drive that close behind me, I was actually scared until I saw it was a cop, then he weaved in and out of traffic never using his turn signals and cutting off multiple cars with just inches to spare plus he was trying to intimidate other drivers by tailgating them until they changed lanes (think about the crazy drivers on the 347...this was 10 times worse). Like I said, if it were just speeding I wouldn't really care, but this was absolutely

Alert | Yes you can report it to DPS. However, what business do you have doing 85 mph to catch up to a speeding patrol car, who based on your description, is on a call, likely a backup call. You just admitted you felt their driving was extremely dangerous so you drived just as dangerous to get their license plate? 85 mph in any speed limit zone is a criminal traffic offense.
Patrol cars frequently tailgate they need vehicles to get out of their way. Believe it or not, they sometimes cannot drive in traffic packs, especially if its an emergency or backup call. Officers aren't trying to intimidate drivers by tailgating. Believe it or not they are just trying to drive home from work or get lunch they are taking important calls and 99 percent of the time driving 65 mph like you are supposed to do will put someone's life at risk.

Alert | | keith is right. You can report it but, most likely your complaint would be dismissed. This could have been a life threatening call. Some officers get a bit more overly excited about calls than others, however, they will drive as fast as poss. to save a life or if another officers life is in danger. They are brothers and they stick together. Best of luck if you report it. | | Live every day as if it were your last and smile!

Alert | report it to the local area DPS. Get an incident number on your observation and ask for a clarification of what the officer was assigned to at the time. (That way you will know for sure what the overall picture was)
If you had a department I would have suggested contacting the watch commander on duty.
I absolutly support the police. I have seen many brave acts. It is up to citizens to notify if an officer is causing more of a problem then he is helping in the same way an officer has a duty to ensure others' safety.
If you truly feel he was placing people in danger, it does need to be noted. I have done this before and found it helped in a couple of cases to make the department aware of a possible problem and correct them.
They are human too and the adrenaline rush can be pretty high while on a call. One of the things that every department I have ever dealt with has always stressed is overall safety. That includes to the public and that of their own officers.
Best of luck. | | Let X=X | |

Alert | Keith--I see how my post seems misleading, I do not know if he was on a call or not. However, at no time did he have lights or sirens on. He was not only tailgating vehicles, but he was weaving in and out of traffic without using a turn signal even once and cutting off not just regular cars, but semi-trucks. You are correct, I shouldn't have been speeding, but I was NOT driving like him other than that. He was directly in front of me, I didn't taligate or change lanes. If he needed to get around those cars so badly why didn't he a) turn on his lights or b) drive on the shoulder? As far as tailgating, I still don't understand why he wouldn't turn on his lights to tell people to get out of his way if it were an emergency. I was behind him for many miles and witnessed this behavior the entire time...not just for a mile or two. Also, my journey with this officer started on the 10 in Phoenix and he was not Phoenix PD...I guess my thought is that if it was an emergency, wouldn't there have been another officer closer to that emergency? By the time I exited the freeway he was long past the exit for Casa Blanca and like I said, I first saw him in Phoenix. I guess it is possible that he was some how specialized to deal with certain calls and so they did need him specifically. I'm not saying it's impossible that he was on a call, but even if he was, his driving was putting his life and the life of civilians on the road in danger (spare me the lecture about my speed, I've already admitted fault to it). The interesting thing about your post is that other people I know in law enforcement have told me that I should report it and that he should not have been driving that way under any circumstances, these law enforcement officers were far less defensive about my experience than your post is. Also, the last I was told criminal speeding is 21 miles over the speed limit, not a specific speed....I'm not a cop, so maybe the rules have changed since I was told this. I don't typically travel that fast so I've never really been concerned with that law.
Mallard--thanks for the info....and uh, thanks for not berating me for speeding...'cause you know, I'm the only person that has ever sped on the I-10....guess I'm just the only person stupid enough to admit doing it.

Alert | I believe I was on the freeway at the same time as this incident. If it was a white Crown Victoria with the word "Police" on the back in blue but with no agency, I saw the side markers that said "Capital Police." That would make sense coming from Phoenix. I believe they are working a security detail off of the 238 just into Maricopa County. This is not the first time I have witnesseed one of their cars speeding, weaing in and out of traffic, etc. Call Capital PD and complain, I bet this is one of their cars.

Alert | | nope...not the same car. This was a black car, but not new like what we have in Maricopa. I think it had Police, 911, and the car number in yellow writing...but maybe it was white. It had an emblem on the driver's door (I never saw the passenger side of the car) and it was round, not shaped like a badge like some are. I have never ever seen a police officer drive the way he was. Even in an emergency. I've even been in the path of two different high speed chases and the police didn't drive like this guy.

Alert | | alyssald...if that is the descrition of the car than it is a Gila River police car. They are the only ones I have seen that have that picture on their cars and they are black in the rear and front and white in the middle. | | Proud Momma of 2 beautiful boys!!!

Alert | To answer or address numerous points in your post. 85 or over is criminal speeding. 25 or over is off highway. Officers frequently will respond to calls, even emergency ones, with no lights or only back lights due to civillian drivers. The first reaction a civ will have when they see lights are these common reactions: 1) freeze. they wont get out of the patrol cars way, nor do they speed up or slow down. this forces the patrol car to make a lane change which is extremely dangerous. 2) speed up. guess what he's coming somewhwere so I can do whatever I want. Puts other drivers in danger also makes it hard to pass them 3) slow down and not move over. my personal favorite. drop to 60 or 50 in heavy traffic so we can move around them and we have to drop our emergency response speed extremely low 4) move over right away without looking. great if you need to take a wreck before going to a backup call To address driving on the shoulder. Have you ever pulled over into the shoulder on any highway? Normally uneven, full of large debris. Extremely dangerous... only used if traffic is stopped. I understand your issue. My suggestion is once again report it to the department let them handle it. Also I would suggest doing a ride a long with a department. It will give you a better understanding of an officers job and the driving they are forced to do. Driving fast with lights and sirens on is not fun.

Alert | | I agree. Do a ride along with an agency. I have to disagree with the driving fast with lights and sirens is not fun. I had a lot of fun when the officer I rode with had to respond to a call. Of course my ride along was mandatory since I worked for the department but I highly recommend going on one. The other thing I recommend is finding an agency that does a civilian police academy. Is it like an 8 week class (give or take a week) and it teaches civilians about the entire police department, not just the officers themselves (even though thiers jobs cover a majority of the class). | | Proud Momma of 2 beautiful boys!!!
