While driving home from a night out with my husband last night at around 1am, we came into town and slowed down to the legal speed limit. We were not so surprised to see a Maricopa cop fly right past us going at least 15 over. No, he wasn't going to a call or anything because he stopped at the next couple stop lights. Why is it okay that they can speed through town whenever they want and we have to make sure we don't go just a few miles over the speed limit? Who do they think they are? Why is their reason for speeding more important than any of ours? So thanks Maricopa police car 410 for giving us no reason to respect you. Practice what you preach/punish. I'm done ranting...

He has a gold-shield pass.  He can speed anytime he likes too.

Not to come to his defense but, how do you know he was not attempting to back up a call and was no longer needed and was called off and that was why he sped past you and then stopped at the next few lights. You never know.

I could ask you the opposite of your question, how do you know he wasn't just speeding because he could.  I would think if he was heading for a call, whether it be for a back up or not, he would at least had his emergency lights on. Oh, and I'm not defending either opinion, just saying you both could be right.

Or they could both be wrong...

I don't know the proper code they have for it. But, sometimes cops get calls that require them, TO NOT turn on their lights. This could have been the case, maybe? If not, then he/she is just abusing their authority.

I was told a story about a Chandler police officer receiving a ticket from a photo van for speeding while he was responding to a call. No lights or sirens were on, but the records show he was actually on his way to a legitimate call. I believe he was doing 47 in a 35. Department allowed the ticket to stand, and he's going to spend a day participating in traffic school.

As for the Maricopa cops.... you should see them blast through on Wilson as they're heading back to the police station. Speed limit is 25 since it's residential, but a minimum of 40 is usually preferred. Zoom zoom.

They should be setting an example by their actions. No matter what time of the day.

You have no idea what was going on in their car...worry about what is going on in your car not theirs. Besides we would all be in jail for speeding on a daily basis and we all know it. We just don't get caught.

Who pissed in pissedparents cherrios??

My aunt was t-boned head on by a cop in CA. She was making a left turn on a green arrow, and he ran it. Turns out he had no call, and he was on his way back to the station. So I don't wanna hear the BS about cops having a hard job and all that. Cops break the law MORE than we do because they can get away with it. Once in awhile you'll get a cop who doesn't have his head up his butt with power, but it's pretty rare.

A word to the wise ain't necessary -- it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

The people who have a negative view of our police department are probably on the wrong side of the law, more often than not.

So he made a mistake and had an accident...OMG! Like I said - I cut them slack because I need them far more then they need me.

Sorry but I still feel they should set a good example. Lots of us have tough jobs, but being a police officer or anyone in a leadership role should be setting a good example. Police officers while yes they are risking their lives on the job (so do many others also) they are still not above the law. And no I will not cut them slack especially if they are putting my and/or my familys lives at risk.

"So he made a mistake and had an accident...OMG" Seriously would you feel that way if it was your family member involved in that accident?

Who are the people (who love to bash the MPD) going to call, when they have a problem?  The MPD.

Actually pissedparent, I don't speed. I always have my cruise control set to exactly or less than the speed limit. While I agree that police officers do have a rough job, so have/do I. I currently work as an ER nurse and have worked on an ambulance in a ghetto in NY. The only difference between police and EMS there, is that they are armed. Although I WILL be calling them if I ever have a problem, I still think they need to setting the correct example and stop thinking that they're above the law.

Excuse me while I laugh my ass off! Don't think for one second I believe that you don't speed even if it's unintentional. 26 when it's 25...36 when it's 35; you get my drift. Just accelerating a little bit over means your speeding. Get off it....we've all been there.

Do I think cops should be flying though town at 80 MPH? No...but if all "concerned citizens" worried about their OWN driving as much as they did the MPD or anyone else for that matter....they would be better off.

Colgate- I completely agree with you on this.  I have many good friends of mine are police/sheriff and I have done many ride along's myself.  I can't tell you how many times I have witness/participated in the above.  Every call they go to is important and they need to get there ASAP to get it done and move on to the next call.

I also agree with many of the other comments.  for example, people need to worry about their own driving.  it is not only the speeding that we all need to be worried about it is the stupid drivers that are text messaging, or talking on the phone.  I am not saying that I don't do these things, all I am saying is that if you are going to say something about someone else then you need to think about yourself first.

I am not saying this officer was in the wrong or in the right, just saying that before everyone thinks about bashing peace officers, they should first think about the job they do (putting their lives on the line).  Also not to take another way from anyone's else job, (ER nurse) but not many people can say that they run to a shots fired call , many say I heard it or I am not going over there.
