09/13/2008 5:52 PM Alert

I live in Cobblestone Farms and just want to apologize for my driving.  Every night when I am on my way home, I travel northbound on 347.  When I get to the intersection of 347 and Cobblestone, I turn into the left turn lane.  I then wait until I get the protected green arrow to turn in.  I know this is terribly incovenient for all those in a huge hurry that want to take the turn when it is the regular green light.  I have lived here awhile now and have witnessed 2 fatalities at the intersection myself, and have heard about several others.  Many of them caused by people attepting to make that turn and not being able to see around those cars in the right turn lane in front of them waiting to turn into Rancho.  So, I choose to wait the additional minute to a minute and a half for the protected light.  So while you are cussing me out, throwing your hands up, trying to run me off the road when I finally do turn, I remind myself that I am going to get home in one piece and see my beautiful daughter and husband when I get home.  And thanks to me, so will you.  That is, if you don't wreck trying to run me of the road and flip me the finger.  I drive a silver sedan with the COC sticker on it.  So when you see me sitting there, realize I am not going through the light until I get a protected arrow, no matter how much you honk and scream at me.  But don't worry, I am not offended easily!

Sounds all well and good in theory. But what if a driver isnt paying attention SB and runs the red on a "protected green arrow" and hits you? What if one of those impatient drivers from RED to Cobblestone and back again runs a red on a "protected arow" and hits you? Anybody can be hit anytime anywhere doing anything. Just remember that. People die in their living rooms when people drive through them. Accidents happen anywhere you go. But good luck with that if it works for you. Just out of curiosity, what about lights w/o "protected green arrows" and you can't see around traffic? Such as SB 347 onto Honeycutt? Or NB at the light at Chase...no arrow either. I have no intent of "offending you" just trying to put in perspective, that no matter what you do, accidents happen. Enjoy the time with your family.

You have made me want to apologize to the driver of the black SUV, who was on Honeycutt around 7:30 PM. I am so sorry I honked at you when you decided to switch lanes to pass me and then suddenly put on your brakes and cut back in front of me when you realized the stop sign was closer than you thought. And also for honking at you when I passed you on Porter when you couldn't decided which lane you wanted to be in. NOT!! I am NOT sorry for any of that. Thanks for flashing your brights at me after we turned on Bowlin before you turned into Glennwilde. My son and baby are my world and pulling that crap pisses me off, hence the honking and flashing my brights at you when you cut me off.

Proud Momma of 2 beautiful boys!!!

Code 3, you are right.  That is why I wait once the light turns green and look for those who "forget" to stop.  I realize I can be hit at anytime.  But if I can't see if there are any vehicles coming, I am not going.  Luckily, that is my choice since I am the driver.  Yes, I am using this forum to vent, rather than chase the guy down who literally ran me off the road.  It made me feel better to write this.  There will continue to be people who sit behind me at that light and lay on their horns, thinking that will make me pull up into the turn to try to see and then gun it if I think I might be able to make the turn before the vehicles traveling at 80 miles an hour southbound t-bone me.  But, even when I don't have my daughter in the vehicle, I am not going to chance it.  I put my life on the line everyday with my work.  Boy how ironic it would be to get killed on my way home just because I was in a hurry!  I figured if even one person reads this, and thinks twice next time they lay on the horn at somebody who isn't trying to pull into oncoming traffic, then it was worth the effort.  If not, I sure feel better.

LadyBPA,
Honestly, I don't think you have anything to apologize for. You are being a safe driver. And we need more of that out here. I know that we have all chosen to live out here but driving like a maniac isn't the answer. I will admit that I have driven like a mad-man on 347 trying to keep up with traffic so I don't get run over or ran off the road by someone. And who knows if you would have made a safe turn with out a protected greeen arrow and the maniac behind you may have been t-boned for not being as safe. There are a lot of what-if's and speculation. But don't apologize for being safe and wanting to spend time with your family.

LadyBPA, do you also sit through the green light sans arrow when you can see there's no oncoming traffic? I've noticed several people that do that, and I wonder what the HELL they're thinking?!?!?

As far as driving on 347 goes, I've found that my gas mileage goes WAY up if I put the cruise on 55MPH and stay to the right. I've also found that it's not necessary to look forward, as traffic goes by me so fast I quickly lose sight of their tail lights. That's a good thing, too, because now I'm forced to keep a constant eye on my rear view mirror to avoid those morons who like to do 80MPH or more trying to pass all those cars in the FAST lane. I had to whip into the emergency lane 3 times last week to keep from getting rear-ended.

Is it too much to ask that people leave for work 10 minutes earlier so they're not so inclined to drive like it's a NASCAR race?

Sometimes I do wait for the arrow even if there is no other traffic.  That is why I am apologizing.  Yes, it irritates people.  If it is 2 in the morning, and there is noone out, I make the turn.  But at 5:00 PM and there are a lot of people on the road, and people waiting in the turn lane to turn into Rancho, I just wait.  I used to try to pull out to try to see around them, and then gun it to make the turn.  But my stress level rises to a very uncomfortable level.  So, why stress out when I can just wait.  Usually I wait an additionl minute or two.  I have noticed that my drive home form work from Casa Grande is so much more pleasant and I am relaxed when I do get home.  I truly pray for all those who have to drive 347 all the way from I-10.  I used to be one of those people who really did get Road Rage and would scream at people who didn't drive the way I thought they should.  I realize now I have no control over what they do, but can certainly control my own behavior.  So everyone waiting to make that turn behind me, just sit back and relax because I am not going anywhere.

Why don't you contact your state legislator and have them ban all left turns state-wide?  Imagine how low your stress would be then!

Just a question out of curiousity...

I am from Sacramento, where it is unheard of being able to turn without a green arrow. Every stop light has arrows for turns, and I mean every stop light where I lived, and you cannot turn unless that arrow is green. It has been difficult to get used to making turns when the light is green to oncoming traffic from the other direction. I guess I just thought you had no choice to turning, of course when you could clearly it is safe to turn. Its like "choosing" to not go on a green light..? Is it not part of traffic laws to obey the traffic lights?

I guess I was just wondering if your allowed to just wait for a green turn arrow, when the light is green to go straight and it is safe to make the turn?

If there is only an arrow light that changes green, yellow, red then you can only turn on the green arrow...however, if the arrow light also has a green circle on the same panel then you can turn on the green circle as well as the arrow...does that make sense? I don't know how to explain it without visual aides So if you're at the light on 347 and CG Hwy, you can only turn on the green arrow because it's on it's own light panel. However, if you're at 347 and Smith-Enke you can turn on the green arrow and a green light because the arrow and green circle are on the same panel...

Ok I understand you completely...but when you said "However, if you're at 347 and Smith-Enke you can turn on the green arrow and a green light because the arrow and green circle are on the same panel"...you "can" turn, but do you "have" to turn (if its safe)???? Could you get pulled over for "choosing" not to turn unless that arrow is green (in reference to your scenario above in quotes)? I am difficult huh LOL

oooohhhh...hmmm...I don't know. I would say if you're in Maricopa and you have a cop behind you and you aren't doing what THEY want you to do, then yes, you can get pulled over You might get a ticket for something like obstructing traffic, maybe??? I'm not sure I understand not turning when your vision is obstructed, but not gonna lie, I'm one of those people who gets annoyed when there is obviously no traffic coming and someone doesn't turn left.

If it's clear, go. You are safer then if you go on the protected arrow as some cars may run the red and smack into you.

LadyBPA,
What do you do when there is no left turn arrow at an intersection and it is only a yield on green light? Do you sit there all day?

She sits there for 5 or 6 lights, just to make sure.
