It's up to the mortgage companies to tell the borrower what is a reasonable amount they qualify for.


And it's up to the borrower to decide what works in their budget and evaluate potential disastrous variations. The lenders are not now and never were your friends. They are trying to make money off of the borrower. Why would anyone take their "advice" as the gospel truth? If someone didn't know they were taking a risk, they simply didn't do their homework.
