Alert | I as well as thousands of residents of Copa get to drive by Maricopa mountain. Well one day I decided to go there and hike up the mountain. But when I arrived the area is fenced off with "notice" postings on the fence. Gila River Indian community has fenced off the mountain to the public, anyone caught tresspassing can have their vehicle and possessions confiscated and will be arrested. Anyone know who to contact about accessing Maricopa mountain?

Alert | I'll save you 8 hours of being transfered and hung up on....
I had this same question last year. I called the GRIC and asked around about the rules. After no less than 20 calls and transfers, I was transfered to a male who I think was about the equivalent of our governor. He told me, and I quote "The Gila River Community does not permit aimless wandering on it's land." Aimless wandering? I told him I wanted to hike. He told me that is considered wandering, since I have no destination. I countered that my destination was the top of the mountain, and then the bottom. He chuckled, but maintained that hiking was considered wandering under their laws. I asked him what would happen if I was "caught wandering." He told me I could be arrested, I could be fined, and my hiking equipment could be seized. But then he told me that if I explained to the officer that stopped me that I was hiking, I could be let go. That's right. I might be arrested, I might be let go.
I LOVE to hike, and I'd love to hike close by, but those are bad odds for me. Apparantly, I'll need to wander elsewhere.

Alert | I assume the "mountain" you are referring to, is the one with the letter "M" on it; that is Pima Butte. It is pretty typical for Indian reservations to post the "no tresspessing or we'll seize you and all your stuff" signs. Most reservations require a permit to access/use their land. I am sorry, I don't know where permits may be available locally, or if they would even give one out for Pima Butte. I have mostly seen them for using thier lakes, or hunting. I have several friends have their fishing equipment seized for doing nothing more than having more than one pole in the water; they can be very strict. I think it depends on who the officer is and what kind of day he/she may be having. Good luck - s

Alert | | Someone recently told me that Pima Butte is the site of a fierce battle between the Maricopa and another tribe. The battle was so bad that the Gila have roped it off. They consider it sacred, but also want to remember it, not want that place to have any more bad scenes.

Alert | | I was told you could go on the land and hike IF you were with a member of the tribe. Time to branch out and make some new friends to hike with!

Alert | the answer is really simple. The Indians were pushed to the land by early settlers. Then the Indians were given the land and told they were not bound to US laws. So, they are indeed their own sovereign nation. They have their own laws, and they can do what they please with you and your possession if you are on their land, their roads or their mountains. arizona is full of mountains, find another.
the reservation is no joke. they are not bound to the laws of any government but their own. Walking on the reservation could be no big deal, or could be the equivalent of walking the streets of Iran. its their nation to do as they please with. respect that and stay out with the exception of the casinos and state roads. if you get caught somewhere you do not belong with a vehicle you just gave that vehicle to the tribe. there is nothing you can do to get it back unless if the tribe decides to keep it. good luck telling your loan holder that the Indians took it... | | Follow your bliss. Alert | There's a fence and and no trespassing signs. It's private property. Where does this become difficult to understand? If you can get a day pass, good job. But otherwise anyone that trespasses deserves what they get.

Alert | | I know that the mountain is on thair land. I would be upset if people wanted to walk around in my back yard for recreation purposes. I would suspect, as Maricopa becomes more populated, that the tribe would be interested in setting up some sort of park around the mountain and charging people to hike to the top. I'd know I'd be signifigantly less upset about people wandering around aimlessly in my back yard if they paid me $10 for the honor...and pulled some weeds while they were at it.

Alert | Vinny, Just to clarify that Reservations and trusts have to abide by Federal laws administered by tribal council. So if something is illegal on the Federal level, then its illegal on the reservation. This is why they can have casinos and cheap ciggerettes, but not hash bars or coke dens. They are sorta like a state of the US, almost a perfect redention of what the early anti-federalists wanted.

Alert | Contact your tribal elder, at your earliest convenience. He will probably want something in trade. So, make sure you bring some whiskey and some beads. That should cover it.
